Article 07 - How Lack of Training Affects Your Organisation

How Lack of Training Affects Your Organisation

Successful companies focus on attracting, developing, and keeping top-performing employees. Quality training programs bring clear benefits, like better productivity, fewer people leaving, fewer accidents, and happier employees. It’s also important to understand the cost of not training employees. Neglecting to implement training essentially means neglecting all areas of your organization. An effective training program is imperative for running a successful organization. Insufficient training in an organization can have a range of negative effects that impact both individual employees and the overall performance of the company.

According to research result of the Waqanimaravu, et al (2020) explain that relationship between employee training and service quality in the hospitality industry is having a close correlation and employees who had well trained always provide quality and accurate service to their customers. In addition to that Parasuraman et al (1991) argued that customer satisfaction may be contingent on the post purchase evaluation of the quality of service provider by a hospitality organization and research evidence shows that services quality is a critical success factor in this competitive sector. Moreover, Waqanimara, et al (2020) explain that the success of the hospitality industry depends on customer perception of satisfaction and perceived value of the services rendered by hospitality businesses.

Gendron (2022) explains that today, more than ever, having a strong training and development plan is essential for recruiting. Millennials consider learning and development to be one of the most compelling reasons to join a new organization. Generation X and beyond also need opportunities to upskill and reskill as technology and markets shift. Without proper training opportunities, you could see challenges with employee turnover, retaining employees, and missing out on top recruits.

To truly understand the value that training adds to your organization, it helps to look at the consequences of the lack of training.

Here are a few of the ways ineffective training can affect your entire organization:

01. Untrained Employees Show Weaker Performance and Lower Retention Rates

A weak or non-existent training program can lead to clear signs of low performance. Employees who haven't received proper training tend to produce less work of lower quality. With limited knowledge and training, their performance levels drop, affecting overall profits. This kind of work often results in errors, quality problems, and wasted time redoing tasks. It also negatively impacts customers, suppliers, and other involved parties.

According to Srivastava, et al (2015) the consequences of performance issues due to inadequate training can lead to reduced employee morale and higher turnover rates. Employees value having the right skills for their jobs. When learning tools and performance are lacking, employees leave when mistakes happen and the company falls short of expectations, which further decreases retention.

Gendron (2022) further revealed that, conversely, well-trained employees with the right job skills deliver high-quality work and positively influence the organization. Effective work boosts confidence, leading to greater job satisfaction and better employee retention. Better work quality usually leads to satisfied customers and improved relationships with suppliers and others connected to the business.

When employees are well-trained and equipped with the necessary job skills, they tend to deliver high-quality work that positively impacts the organization. Being effective in their roles boosts their confidence, leading to greater job satisfaction and improved employee retention. Better quality work often leads to satisfied customers and improved relationships with suppliers and other stakeholders.

02. Unsafe Work Environments

Many individuals often associate health and safety training exclusively with hospital staff, construction workers, and law enforcement. However, safety training shouldn't be limited to particular industries; it should be a standard practice across all types of organizations. By educating your employees about the best methods to maintain a secure workplace, you can significantly decrease the likelihood of incidents occurring. Every organization bears the responsibility to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its employees, and training plays a crucial role in prevention. Neglecting safety can also lead to decreased employee retention.

Moreover, Gendron (2022) explains that, physical safety isn't the only aspect to consider when it comes to safety-focused training in your organization. Establishing an atmosphere of psychological safety helps employees feel comfortable asking questions and sharing feedback. Encouraging employees to take calculated risks, learn from mistakes, and be open fosters psychological safety within your organization.

03. Lack of Knowledge of Industry Trends and Policies

In our fast-changing society, keeping up with industry knowledge is no longer just a nice-to-have; it's crucial. An organization that's a front-runner in its field can slide down the ranks due to a lack of training. Failing to educate your employees about industry trends, regulations, and advancements means your entire organization will miss out on essential innovations. Companies that bridge this gap by enhancing their workforce's skills are more adaptable and competitive, enabling them to swiftly adjust and lead trends.

Moreover, neglecting to train your employees in new policies, regulations, requirements, and practices can lead to legal complications for your organization, resulting in substantial costs.

04. Training Reduces Risk and Improves Productivity & Retention

Training doesn't just bring about positive effects across various aspects of your organization; it also acts as a preventive measure against serious errors. Implementing suitable training programs can lead to enhanced productivity, increased job satisfaction, and reduced employee turnover. Creating a strong training regimen contributes to maintaining your company's competitiveness, well-being, and efficiency.

Waqanimaravu, et al. (2020) highlight that HR plays a critical role in order to gather suggestions from head of departments in order to determine whether their department's employees are up to required standards and need to organise appropriate training facilities to maintain the quality delivery, service, and overall performance.

How to Deal with a Lack of Training at Work

As we have discussed, there are many negative outcomes associated with a lack of training in the workplace. On the other hand, there are a number of benefits to training employees, including improvements in performance, efficiency, productivity, and opportunities for development. There are things you can do to resolve a lack of training in your workplace, including:

Encouraging conversations around development – in order to achieve a goal, it is likely that some training and learning will be required. Encouraging discussion around training and ensuring that employees know why it is important, will help employees apply themselves fully to training. Open discussions can also help with understanding each employee’s personal development goals.

Creating personal development plans – one way of understanding each employee’s training needs is by creating personal development plans. This will help you outline what the employee’s goals are and what steps they need to take to achieve them

Differentiating between mandatory training and optional training – it is important to establish which training all of your employees need and which training is optional. Optional training should be offered around topics that will help employees with their personal development, mandatory training includes the necessary information that all employees need to know regardless of their personal development goals.

Providing eLearning opportunities – once you have established your employees’ training needs, including mandatory and optional training, you need to find a training provider. Some topics can be taught through online training, such as health and safety training for employees. Other training that is specific to your organisation may need to be taught in-house.

    1. Absolutely, you have correctly summarized the essence of the article. Furthermore, the absence of proper training can have detrimental effects on an organization. It often results in decreased productivity as employees struggle with tasks and errors increase. Low-quality work becomes more common, leading to dissatisfied customers and potential reputational damage. Safety risks escalate as employees may not be knowledgeable about proper procedures, endangering themselves and others. Additionally, inadequate training can lower employee morale, causing disengagement and potentially increasing turnover rates. In essence, neglecting training undermines operational efficiency, safety, and overall organisational well-being.

      according to
(Mwema and Gachunga, (2014) Employees are the backbone of the organization. The accomplishments or issues experienced by the organisation are contingent on the performance of its employees. Therefore, it is vital for organisational leaders to recognise the importance of training and development for employee performance and evaluation.

  2. Agreed, A lack of employee training negatively impacts organizations by reducing performance, productivity, and retention. Untrained employees show weaker performance and higher turnover rates. Neglecting safety training creates unsafe work environments. Organizations miss out on industry trends and policies, losing competitiveness and facing legal issues. Proper training prevents errors, improves productivity and job satisfaction. (Cheng E. W. L., Ho D. C. K. 2001). Addressing the lack of training involves development discussions, personal plans, and eLearning opportunities for success.

    1. Untrained employees exhibit weaker job performance due to unfamiliarity with tasks, leading to slower work and more errors. This dissatisfaction contributes to disengagement, lower productivity, and ultimately higher turnover rates. Furthermore, the frustration of being untrained and unsupported can contribute to higher turnover rates. Employees who feel undervalued and overwhelmed by their tasks are more likely to seek opportunities elsewhere, where they believe their skills will be better utilised and developed. This turnover can result in increased recruitment and training costs for the organisation, further impacting its financial stability.

  4. Agreed, Drayton (2021) states that untrained employees tend to underperform, leading to errors, low-quality work, and wasted time. This affects overall productivity and customer satisfaction. Moreover, employees who do not receive proper training may feel undervalued and dissatisfied, leading to higher turnover rates. Well-trained employees, on the other hand, deliver high-quality work, boost confidence, and contribute positively to the organization.

    1. I appreciate your literature support; it gives more weight to my article. Adding to your point, according to Asim (2013) when a task is not properly performed and the end results are not perceived as expected, the individual may not feel motivated to keep performing, and individuals who are not able to perform at the expected level of performance may even decide to leave the organisation because they feel they are not productive and become dissatisfied.

  6. A strong training and development program can have numerous short- and long-term benefits, including increasing employee engagement and retention rates, encouraging innovative thinking, mitigating risks, and giving your organization a competitive edge.

Industry trends, regulations, and in-demand skills are always changing. If you neglect your employees’ training and development, you’re putting your company’s future success at risk.

Nearly 59% of employees claim they had no workplace training and that most of their skills were self-taught.

74% of workers are willing to learn new skills or re-train in order to remain employable.

87% of millennials believe learning and development in the workplace is important.

    1. You have highlighted a very valid point that needs further explanation. Adding to your point, a robust training and development programme offers both short-term and long-term benefits. In the short term, it improves employee performance, productivity, and morale and reduces errors. It also expedites onboarding for new hires. In the long term, such a programme enhances talent retention, nurtures leadership potential, fosters innovation, boosts competitiveness, and enhances the company's reputation for customer experiences. This comprehensive approach positions the organisation for ongoing success.

  7. Agreed with all the facts you have mentioned in this article. A lack of training can lead to increased costs in a number of ways. For example, it can lead to increased rework, as employees have to redo work that they have done incorrectly. It can also lead to increased customer complaints, which can damage the organization's reputation and lead to lost sales.
According to Becky,(2022), Low performance is one of the most obvious outcomes of having a weak training program or none at all. Employees who have not been trained properly will produce less work and at a lower quality. Less knowledge and training lead to a lower level of performance, resulting in less profit. This type of work often leads to errors, quality issues, and time lost repeating activities. It also has enormous implications for customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders who are all negatively impacted.

    1. You have pointed out many valid points, and the literature support has given a vibrant tone to the article. I completely agree with your comment, as you highlighted. I have listed the main point: how a lack of training leads to increased costs.

      01. Errors and rework: Untrained employees make more mistakes, requiring extra time and resources for corrections.
      02. Customer Dissatisfaction: Poorly trained staff can lead to subpar products or services, resulting in complaints and a potential loss of business.
      03. Employee Turnover: Inadequate training causes disengagement, leading to higher turnover and increased recruitment and training costs.
      04. Productivity Loss: Untrained employees work slower, reducing overall productivity and possibly causing missed opportunities.
      05. Safety Incidents: Insufficient safety training can lead to accidents, incurring medical expenses, legal liabilities, and fines.
      06. Operational Inefficiencies: Lack of understanding in workflows results in inefficiencies, delaying projects, and raising costs.
      07. Missed Innovation: Inadequate skill development hampers the adoption of new technologies and innovative practices.
      08. Reputation Damage: Untrained employees can damage the company's reputation, demanding resources for reputation management.
      09. Training and Onboarding Costs: Replacing dissatisfied employees incurs expenses for hiring and training replacements.

In conclusion, inadequate training affects quality, customer satisfaction, employee retention, and finances, necessitating investment to mitigate these impacts.

In addition to what you highlighted in your note, employee training and development is a vital component of Human Resources planning activities because it not only maximises the returns of individuals but may also attract better talent to the organisation. Bapna et al (2013). Comprehensively, it develops the thinking abilities and creativity of individuals for better decision-making, customer service, complaint handling, and overall self-efficacy (Elnaga & Imran, 2013). In addition, employee training and development provide the capabilities needed when individuals move from one assignment to another of a different nature.

  9. Excellent effort!! In addition to what you said, according to Sylvia Matthews Burwell “Job training empowers people to realize their dreams and improve their lives.” Here are a few examples of how inadequate training can have a negative impact on the entire organization:

    Productivity decline
    Cost increases
    Reputational harm
    Risks to safety have increased
    Morale is low

Training that is ineffective can have a big negative influence on a business. To enhance the success of training, it is critical to ensure that it is appropriately designed, delivered, and evaluated.(Smith, 2023)

According to Azara et al (2013), training has become one of the necessary functions in most organisations, as training leads to superior performance in the same field and is an important part of the human resources department. It has a significant impact on the success of an organisation by enhancing employee performance as well as organisational performance. Further, a lack of training within an organisation can have a range of detrimental effects. Inadequately trained employees might encounter difficulties in executing their tasks efficiently, leading to a waste of both time and resources. Moreover, such employees are more prone to making errors and mistakes due to their limited understanding of proper procedures. These errors can contribute to operational disruptions and compromise the quality of work output. Ultimately, the combined impact of inefficiencies and errors results in decreased productivity, negatively affecting the organisation's overall performance and potentially damaging its reputation in the long run.

In a time of rapid innovation and changing skill sets, inadequate training not only restricts the professional development of individual employees but also stalls the overall progress of the entire business. 1. Indeed, I agree with your note. When employees don't have opportunities to develop and improve within a company, it leads to a range of negative effects. Their productivity tends to drop because they lack motivation to perform well without a chance to learn and grow. This situation also triggers higher turnover rates as employees seek better prospects elsewhere due to feeling stuck and unappreciated. As a result, the workplace becomes marked by overall unhappiness among the staff, negatively affecting teamwork and job satisfaction. Addressing this issue is crucial for maintaining a motivated workforce, boosting productivity, and creating a positive work environment.

Jagero et al (2012) explain that training is the method or manner used to build abilities and enhance employee skills and knowledge by providing new information for them to perform their job efficiently.
